Mike Turnipseed
Executive Director
Kern County Taxpayers Association

“The upgrade and expansion of the refinery has many benefits for Kern County. It will provide an additional 1.2 million gallons a day of clean gasoline and diesel, and that’s going to be very important in meeting Kern County’s growing needs for fuel. In addition, the property taxes paid by the refinery will double. This will help the county and other government agencies meet such growing needs as public safety and road improvement.”

Kevin Burton
School District Board Member

“Kern County will benefit in so many ways from this project. It will create new revenues to improve our local schools. It will help reduce pollution from trucks. And it will introduce environmental programs that we’ve never seen before. For instance, Big West will plant a thousand trees on and near the refinery to help absorb greenhouse gases.”

Derek Yurosek
Vice President of Ag Operations
Bolthouse Farms

“Ninety percent of what we do on the farm is fuel-based, everything from fertilizer to the fuel we run in our diesel engines. So it’s very important to us to have a continuous supply, especially in the peak summer months when we utilize fuel the most. This project will increase the local supply of fuel, which will help the entire Ag industry. The project’s innovative technology will also create a liquid fertilizer by-product, and that’s important because fertilizer costs have doubled in recent years.”

Les Clark
Executive Vice President
Independent Oil Producers Agency

“It’s extremely important to us as independents to have a home for our crude oil. Most people don’t realize that we produce over 60% of the state of California’s oil here in Kern County. The Ag and Oil industries are very dependent on diesel. Diesel is the fuel that runs this economy, both farming and oil.”
