Controlling Valley Pollution

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) are smog-forming chemicals that create 22 tons of air pollution in our valley each year. Nearly 60% of the valley air pollution is caused by cars and trucks! Armed with this knowledge, how can you help reduce valley smog?

Here are a few tips:

At Home -

    1. Deodorants, hair spray, cleaning products and air fresheners are just a few examples of items containing VOC's. Read labels and select products that are water-based to become an air friendly consumer.
    2. Use an electric or manual lawn mower and barbecue using natural gas or propane.
    3. Shop by phone, mail and Internet. Your car emits far more pollutants in its first minutes of operations so if you must drive, do all your errands in one trip.
    4. When replacing your vehicle, look for the most fuel efficient and lowest polluting model.
    5. Make sure paint products are tightly sealed.
    6. Recycle anything and everything. Compost when possible.

At Work -

    1. Bring your lunch to work. You will find  that you are saving money on food and fuel. You will have more time at lunch to eat and relax.
    2. Carpool when possible or even ride a bicycle. All company vehicles should be tuned up on a regular basis.
    3. Use teleconferences for meetings with customers or partners not located at your facility rather than driving or flying. If you must attend out-of-town meetings, try taking the train.
    4. Recycle paper, cardboard, cans and bottles.
